What I Love About Awards Season

People who mail me free copies of books I'd been eyeing online and had regretfully decided against purchasing. (My reading list is long, and my pockets, alas, are not infinitely deep.)

I mean, I'm happy to look at books and stories from all my online friends. But when the book also happens to be one I've been drooling over... now, that's just cool. :)

Why I Hate Nebula Season

Ok, so there's like a bajillion books published every year. Plus all these novellas and short stories and novelettes and what-have-you.

And do you know how many books per month I read? Two. If I'm lucky.

So there's absolutely no way that I can, within twelve months, read a statistically significant sample, much less read ALL of them and nominate the five works per category that I consider top-notch. Simply not possible. And I get that, but my occassionally obsessive-compulsive brain cells don't, which is why I generally hide my head in the sand and quietly let awards season pass me by.

I hate making decisions on insufficient data.

I hate even worse the idea that somewhere, in some far corner of the fictiverse, there is a stupendous, absolutely unbelievable story that I will not read, simply because the world is too big and I am too small.

To that story and its author, I am apologizing in advance.
