Penny Power

My son is sitting at the kitchen table diligently doing his homework all by himself. This is a monumental achievement; usually he wants me to sit next to him offering morale support.

This incredible feat of independence has come at the cost of about 20 cents. I told Alex I'd be checking in on him now and then, and if he was working when I happened to check, I'd put a penny on the table for him.

I have never seen a child scramble so hard to get back on task at the sound of approaching footsteps.

...and of course you realize that at some point, pennies ain't gonna cut it. The rattle of coins will turn to the rustle of paper!
